Overview

Safe-Edge has been developed to be a cost effective, long term solution to the obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act Part III. In order that the obligations are satisfied, it is essential all stairs accessible by members of the public should have a contrasting coloured nosing fitted to the step edges.

In addition, such nosings should provide a slip resistant top surface. Safe-Edge is a pre-formed fibre glass profile constructed by combining polyester resins with fibre reinforcements. Two types of grit surfaces are available, Type 'I' with its smaller grit size offers good slip properties whilst allowing a surface that’s reasonably easy to clean. Type 'E' has a much heavier grit profile and is ideal for the rigours of the external environment.

Designed with a patented feather edge for further safety, Safe-Edge can be fitted to almost any step without creating a trip hazard. Even when fitted to landings and extra deep steps, its unique design provides the most secure solution.

It is important to note that to meet Building Regulations (for new build) the nosing must be 55x55mm on both the tread and the riser’, must not be bigger or smaller, and should also be of a permanently contrasting material.

Benefits

Easy Installation
Quick and simple to install Safe-Edge nosings can be either glued or screwed to an existing substrate or just simply glued using a structural adhesive.

Slip Resistant
As with the majority of products in the NonSlip range, the Safe-Edge profiles have a compound of a special formula of grit which is added in the final layer of laminate.

Robust Fibreglass
Safe-Edge is manufactured from tough hard wearing fibreglass which makes up the core of the material thereby offering a long term solution for step edges.

Legislation Compliant
The product in the 55x55mm profile meets the requirements of the current Building Regulations. Furthermore the requirements of the DDA are also met by Safe-Edge stair nosings.

High Visibility Colours
As required by regulations the nosing profiles are designed to provide a contrasting colour to step edges. The standard colours are yellow and white. (click here to see Lumi-Edge glow colours)

SafeEdge Riser Plates (SERPS)
SERPS are a useful addition to the SafeEdge range. Installing the risers mean that not only is the whole of the tread covered but the step riser itself is also completely covered offering a visually better appearance. (see SERPS for more details)

Sizes

Safe-Edge Standard Nosing
Two sizes of Safe-Edge are available, first the standard 70x30mm for existing buildings. Applicable to new build, the 55x55mm nosing is compliant with the current Building Regulations.

The nosings are available on speedy deliveries in a maximum length of 3000mm, and can be cut to size as required in-house.

All Non-Slip products made of fibreglass and grit surface have been tested using the pendulum test method which is detailed in the British Standard BS4592-0:2006
