Pollution Prevention Guidance Notes (PPGs)

Below are the PDF links to the relevant PPGs from the Environment Agency.
Each PPG is targeted at a particular industrial sector or activity and aims to provide advice on statutory responsibilities and good environmental practice. As well as being used by the Agencies staff, the PPGs also function as invaluable sources of advice for industry and members of the public.

Any notes pointed are to be used as guidance only and are not intended as an interpretation of the Law. Users should seek the assistance of their local Environment Agency office for specific meanings or other help in making decisions regarding absorbent

General Guide to the Prevention of Pollution: PPG 1
A basic introduction to help you avoid pollution incidents

Above ground oil storage: PPG 2
Advice on how to store oil safely in above ground oil stoarge tanks and comply with the law excludes oil refineries and distribution depots

Use and design of oil separators in surface water drainage systems: PPG 3
These guidelines will help you decide if you need an oil separator at your site and, if so, what size and type of separator is appropriate.

Treatment and disposal of sewage where no foul sewer is available: PPG 4
To help you choose the correct sewage disposal option This PPG includes information about the treatment and disposal methods available, maintenance and legal requirements

Works and Maintenance in or near water: PPG 5
If you are planning works near, in or over water, this guidance provides advice on how to to avoid pollution of the water environment, waste management and incident response

Safe Operation of Refuelling Facilites : PPG 7
These guidelines give help to operators of refuelling facilities on legal requirements, permitting, risk assessment, site drainage, safe storage of fuels and non fuel products, routine maintenance, waste handling and incident response.

Safe Storage and Disposal of Used Oils: PPG 8
Advice on storing and disposing of used oils safely. This information applies to those carrying out a single engine oil change, to large industrial users
